Still no badminton

Badminton is again cancelled tonight! So much for assurances that badminton would be back to normal this week!

The maintenance people were unable to eliminate all of the problems with the back-up generator system. The entire school will be without power tonight in order to complete the repairs. I'll advise you one way or the other about the outcome in time for Thursday's badminton.

Fingers crossed,

Terry

No badminton Thurs - electrical problems not solved.

More bad news. No badminton this Thursday, Nov. 7th, because the repair parts won't arrive and be installed until this Friday. I've been assured that Badminton can definitely resume as normal next week.

See you on court on Tues. Nov. 12th.

No badminton tonight because of elecrical prblems at school

Please note that there's no badminton at the club tonight!  Sorry for the last minute notice!

I received a phone call only moments ago at 1:40 that the school won't have lighting tonight because electricity will be off while damaged emergency backup generators can be repaired or replaced.

Adults will be welcome at the Belleville Club's Quinte Christian High School at 138 Wallbridge Loyalist Rd, just north of Hwy 2. Runs 7 to 10 pm. Fee is $5.

CUPE strike averted. Permits have been restored

Please note that our Tuesday and Thursday permits are back to normal now that CUPE strike has been averted.

That means there will indeed be badminton Tuesday Oct. 8th (tomorrow night).

However, remember there's no badminton on Thursday Oct. 10 which is Parent/Teacher Night.

See you on court,

Terry

Badminton cancelled until further notice (re CUPE strike)

Please note that badminton is cancelled at CHSS until further notice in response to CUPE strike action. I had hoped that the strike action would affect schools in a rotating way but our school board has opted for an almost complete shut down for safety and other reasons.

Here's the notice I received last night from the school board:

"In light of the pending CUPE strike action notification, and in order to minimize any impact on students and school communities, the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board will be cancelling all Community Use of Schools permits, effective 7:00 am. October 3, 2019, until further notice.

Please note this does NOT include outdoor only. (fields and track use) Outdoor permits may continue.

We will keep our families and communities informed of further developments as the information becomes available. Please know that you will be notified the moment any changes to your permit occur.

We thank you for your understanding and patience.

HPEDSB Community Use"

For those willing to travel, Belleville Badminton Club's Quinte Christian School (a different school board) at 138 Wallbridge Loyalist Rd. is apparently unaffected by the CUPE issues and will be open for adult badminton players on Tues. & Thurs. nights. Nightly guest fee is $5, with play running from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. As well, Belleville's Wellness Centre on Hwy 37 south of Hwy 401 has drop-in badminton on Wednesdays from 7:00 to 9:15 p.m. @ $3 per night.

Hopefully, negotiations won't drag on and we'll be back on our courts soon. I'll let you know asap when we are allowed to resume badminton at our school.

In the mean time, take care.

Terry

September Start for Badminton (& Bowling)

Today’s newsletter is unusual in that it’s a BADMINTON newsletter that also talks about BOWLING.

ABOUT BADMINTON:
The 2019-20 badminton season is fast approaching. We hope you have had a good summer and are looking forward to playing badminton again.
Opening day is Tuesday Sept. 10th and closing day is Tuesday June 23, 2020. Play nights run most Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9:30 pm.
Fee options are as per last season, as set out below. All fees should be paid before going on court to play. We encourage all players to come out as often as possible so that there is a good variety of players and games every night.

Fee Options for Memberships
Full Season Membership: $80 for adult (players over 18 year s old),
$40 for juniors (players under 19 years old).
Half Season Membership (Session #1, Sept 10th to Jan. 30th): Adults @ $45, Juniors @ $25.
Half Season Memberships (Session #2, Feb. 4th to June 23rd): Adults @ $45, Juniors @ $25.

Fee Options for Nightly (Pay by the Night) Players
Adults @ $5 per night; Juniors @ $2 per night.
Nightly players can convert to season/session members at any time of the year. They will be credited with half of the nightly fees that they have already paid within the season/session when they convert.

ABOUT BOWLING:
One of last year’s badminton club members, Dan Bazinet, has been brave enough to take a major gamble -- he’s purchased and renovated the defunct bowling alley in Tweed. It’s now called “Tweed Lanes”. It too will be starting up in September.
Our badminton club has an unusual connection to bowling -- in our early years of operation we received a major boost in attendance when Tweed’s bowling alley shut down and many bowlers looked to badminton for an alternative social night out.
Perhaps our club can reciprocate and help Tweed Lanes. There are players in our mailing list who have not been very active badminton-wise over the past few years. It's possible those players would be interested in bowling and can give Tweed Lanes the boost it needs for a good startup -- hopefully while continuing to support our club too.
            Dan’s phone # is (613) 919-9549; email is bazinet.dan@gmail.com; and website is https://www.tweedlanes.com.

Thanks,

See you on court.

This season’s last month of badminton. - What is the club’s future?

Please note that there’s no badminton on May 16th and June 6th. As well, this season’s last night of play is on Thursday June 2oth.

What is the club’s future?

Attendances over the past 6 play nights have been unusually low, ranging from 5 to 8 players. On 5 of those nights there wouldn’t have been enough players for doubles, had 2 of the players not turned out because of sickness, injuries, weather, work and family commitments, or holiday plans, etc.

The club needs higher turnouts as a margin of safety to assure nightly play always takes place. This season’s membership, and turnouts in general, are about 2/3 the size of the previous season which was already smaller than its preceding season. The smaller the size the greater the dedication needed to keep the club going in the face of other demands everyone faces.

One of the main purposes of the club is to provide members of Central Hastings and its surrounding communities, regardless (almost) of age and skill, the opportunity to play badminton and get its benefits - socializing, fun, laughter, healthy exercise, and sense of accomplishment.

I’ll soon be asking the school board to renew our permits for another season of badminton. Hopefully enough of us will be in a position to give badminton higher priority in the face of life’s other demands and will come out to the club more often.

Is keeping the club going worthwhile from your perspective? Please let me know.

Many thanks,
